Anjali – A grand redevelopment of a historic building
Anjali, a splendid 96-year-old bungalow, is an emblem of the timeless heritage of Pune’s architecture. Commissioned by the legendary Prof. Shripad Laxman Ajrekar in 1926, this majestic masterpiece has been a beloved icon of the city’s rich cultural history. The bungalow’s location, just off Bhandarkar Road, is the perfect fusion of accessibility and exclusivity – a bustling area teeming with top-tier educational institutions and renowned hospitals, yet still enveloped in a serene, leafy enclave.
This stunning piece of architecture is a true labor of love. Engineer-contractor Purushottam Laxman Modak was handpicked to bring this vision to life, and he delivered with aplomb. The sturdy stone and brick walls are embellished with a mind-boggling 39 windows, 40 doors, and 9 entrances, all intricately designed and crafted with a finesse that is awe-inspiring.
The house boasts three remarkable staircases – one in wood, one in stone, and one with a daring circular iron structure. The masterful use of carved teak wood lends an aura of grandeur, while the red-tiled sloping roof, contrasted against the lush green mango leaves, is a sight to behold.
Speaking with Dr Anjali, the owner, you can feel her love and pride for this bungalow that bears her name. The elegantly crafted woodwork and beautifully designed staircases, she says, are just a couple of the features that make Anjali truly special.
